Salkantay Trek 5D/4N Trekking Hiking Tours Cusco Machu Picchu

This is a walk that is performed by one of the most beautiful places in the world, the Salkantay snow (6271masl), this trek is considered one of the 25 best treks in the world (National Geographic Adventure).

The total distance of this walk is approximately 60km, an average of 6 to 7 hours per day, and you need a good fit for this trek.

ROADMAP

FIRST DAY

Pick up from hotel at 5:00 am

We will travel by car from the Cusco city and we will pass by the picturesque sites called Limatambo and Izcuchaca to reach the town of Mollepata, here we expect our team travelers (Cooks, Horsemen and porters) to begin the adventure that leads to Machu Picchu, the walk is 12 kilometers, that means approximately 6 hours.

The first camp site is the town of Soraycocha (4200 masl)

SECOND DAY

Recommendation is a tradition and recommendation start the day with a cup of coca tea before breakfast, the coca leaf is one of the best remedies for altitude sickness.

This day ascend to the highest point of the route, the pass Salkantay (4600 m), from this point we can appreciate the snowy Salkantay (6271msnm) in all its magnitude and also some minor snow as melting Huamantay Huayanay and many beautiful clear lagoons.

This day the distance traveled is 16 km, within about 7 hours, the camp is in a place called Collpapampa which is located at an altitude of 2900 m.

THIRD DAY

The delicious taste of coca tea and then a breakfast specially prepared for the walk will help us start the day with lots of energy.

This day we will observe the great diversity of flora (orchids, coca plants, ferns ...) and also a diversity of fauna that belongs to the low jungle, birds like the cock rock (Rupícola peruviana) is the national bird representative of Peru.

Today we will walk a distance of 16 km. in a time of 6 hours, much of the road is down hill, this day the camp site is in a place called Lucmabamba, this place is located at 1700 m.

FOURTH DAY

After breakfast we will start the trek towards Aguas Calientes (2000 m), this place is located at the base of Machu Picchu mountain.

The route of this day goes by ancient Inca trail that leads from the camp site to the top of the Llaqtapata mountain (2650 masl) where we will find the remains of an Inca building, the archaeological site of Llactapata, from here you can see the great archaeological complex of Machu Picchu.

Descending from the Llactapata mountain we will walk by the river Aobamba and we will see a stunning waterfall, Aobamba Falls and then we will arrive to the hydroelectric plant of Machu Picchu, where electricity is generated for the Cusco department, also this place is a train station to Aguas Calientes (optionally we can take the train).

After lunch we will walk to the Aguas Calientes town, in this place we will stay in a hotel, optionally we can go to enjoy the relaxing hot springs of the place.

Today we will walk a distance of 12 km. in approximately 6 hours.

FIFTH DAY

On this day breakfast will be served from 4:30 am at the hotel, then we will take the bus to go up from the Aguas Calientes town to Machu Picchu Archaeological Complex in about 30 minutes.

Here we will have a guided tour of the main temples and sights of Machu Picchu for a period of approximately 2 hours, after that we will have the rest of the day and much of the afternoon to observe and explore Machu Picchu on our own.

Then we will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes to board the train to Ollantaytambo station, where there will be a bus waiting for us to back to Cusco city.
